Mirage of Monte Carlo
In the privacy of the small dressing room, Valentina slipped out of her jeans and t-shirt, feeling a pang of vulnerability as she stood in her simple cotton underwear. She stepped into the gown, the silk cascading over her skin like a cool whisper. The fit was nearly perfect, clinging in all the right places, the deep neckline showcasing more décolletage than she was accustomed to revealing.
She emerged hesitantly, and Mirella gave a curt nod of approval. “It will suffice. Now, for your hair and makeup. Sit.” She gestured to a vanity table laden with more cosmetics than Valentina had ever owned in her life.
Mirella worked with brisk efficiency, her fingers deft and sure as she swept Valentina’s hair into an elegant updo, leaving a few artful tendrils to frame her face. The makeup was applied with a light but expert hand – enough to enhance her features, to make her eyes appear larger, her lips fuller, but not so much as to look garish or overdone.
As Mirella worked, she also delivered a rapid-fire briefing on the evening ahead. “You are to be attentive to Mr. Rohan. Listen when he speaks, smile at his jokes, defer to his opinions. You are his elegant, charming companion. You are not to offer unsolicited opinions on business matters. You are not to engage in lengthy conversations with his associates unless he initiates them. Your role is to adorn his arm and enhance his image. Understood?”
Valentina met Mirella’s gaze in the mirror. “Understood,” she replied, her voice tight. She felt like a mannequin, a prop in Darian Rohan’s elaborate game.
Just as Mirella was putting the final touches on Valentina’s makeup, a soft knock sounded at the door. Darian entered, his discerning eyes traveling over Valentina with an evaluative intensity that made her breathing hitch.
He had changed as well, into a perfectly tailored tuxedo that fit him like a second skin. The stark black and white only served to emphasize his cool Nordic coloring, his piercing blue eyes seeming even more intense in contrast.
He nodded, a small, satisfied smile on his lips. “Excellent, Mirella. You’ve outdone yourself. She looks… suitable.”
“Thank you, Mr. Rohan,” Mirella replied, her tone bland. “I believe she’ll serve your purposes adequately.”
Valentina felt a flush of irritation at being discussed as if she weren’t standing right there. “I’m glad I meet your exacting standards,” she said, her voice cool.
Darian’s eyes met hers in the mirror, a flicker of amusement in their depths. “Standards are necessary in my world, Valentina. Shall we? Our guests will be arriving shortly.”
He offered his arm, and after a brief hesitation, Valentina took it, allowing him to lead her out of the cabin and towards the upper decks. As they ascended the polished teak staircase, the sounds of laughter and clinking glasses grew louder, the scent of expensive perfume and salt air tickling her nose.
At the top of the stairs, Valentina paused, taking in the scene before her. The deck had been transformed into a glittering oasis of luxury. White-jacketed waiters circulated with trays of champagne and canapés. Beautiful people in elegant evening wear mingled and chatted, the women’s jewels glittering under lanterns strung overhead. The whole of Monaco sparkled in the distance, the lights of the city reflecting on the dark water of the harbor.
“Remember,” Darian murmured, his breath brushing her ear as he leaned in close. “You are Valentina Gabrielli, my charming, elegant companion. Every eye will be on us. Let the performance begin.”
As they stepped forward, arm in arm, Valentina felt a flutter of nerves in her stomach. She was about to step onto a stage she’d only ever observed from the wings, to play a role she’d never auditioned for. But as she looked at the sea of expectant faces, at the glittering spectacle of wealth and power spread before her, she lifted her chin and pasted a serene smile on her face. She could do this. She had to. Her future, or at least her immediate financial salvation, depended on it.
As they moved through the crowd, Valentina kept the smile firmly fixed on her face, her hand resting lightly on Darian’s arm. She could feel the curious glances, the subtle appraisals of the other guests. Who was this unknown woman on Darian Rohan’s arm? Was she someone of note? Someone who mattered in their rarefied world?
Darian, for his part, played the role of the attentive escort flawlessly. He introduced her to a steady stream of businessmen and their perfectly coiffed wives, his hand resting possessively at the small of her back. He fed her cues in a low murmur only she could hear – names, titles, snippets of information about each person they encountered. Valentina absorbed the information quickly, using it to maneuver the treacherous waters of small talk and social niceties.
“You seem to be taking to this quite naturally,” Darian observed dryly as they paused near the railing, looking out at the glittering lights of Monaco. The moon was high now, casting a shimmering silver path across the dark water.
Valentina took a sip of champagne, the bubbles tingling on her tongue. “It’s not so different from playing a role in a play,” she replied, her voice equally dry. “Though the costumes are certainly more expensive. And the audience is far more critical.”
Darian chuckled, a low, genuine sound that surprised her. “Aptly put.” He turned to face her more fully, his blue eyes glinting in the moonlight. “You’re doing well, Valentina. Better than I expected.”
She arched an eyebrow. “Such high praise, Mr. Rohan. I’m honored.”
“Darian,” he corrected, his voice soft but insistent. “If we are to be convincing as a couple, you should probably call me by my given name.”
“Of course,” Valentina murmured. “Darian.” She tested the name on her tongue, finding it strangely intimate.
As the evening wore on, Valentina found herself relaxing into the role. The champagne helped, loosening the tight knot of tension in her shoulders, making her laughter easier, her smiles more genuine. She discovered an unexpected talent for witty repartee, trading barbs with Darian and holding her own in conversations with his associates.
At one point, they were cornered by a portly businessman who seemed determined to impress Darian with his latest financial conquest. As the man droned on about profit margins and market shares, Darian’s hand found Valentina’s at her side, his fingers interlacing with hers. It was a small gesture, but it sent a surge of awareness through her, a crackle of sensation that had nothing to do with the champagne.
“…and so you see, Darian, this venture is poised to yield unprecedented returns,” the businessman finished, puffing out his chest.
“Fascinating,” Darian replied, his voice smooth, his thumb idly brushing the inside of Valentina’s wrist. “Isn’t that fascinating, my dear?”
Valentina smiled sweetly. “Oh, absolutely,” she purred, leaning into Darian’s side. “Unprecedented returns are my very favorite kind.”
Darian’s lips twitched, and he raised her hand to his lips, pressing a lingering kiss to her knuckles. “A woman after my own heart,” he murmured, his eyes meeting hers.
The businessman looked momentarily nonplussed, but quickly recovered, launching into another monologue about his business acumen.
Later, as they took a turn around the deck, the night air cool on their skin, Darian leaned in close. “You were brilliant with Henderson,” he said, his voice low. “He’s been trying to get me to invest in his latest scheme for months. I believe you may have just saved me a considerable sum of money.”
Valentina looked up at him, a sly smile curving her lips. “All in a night’s work, Mr. Rohan. I mean, Darian.” She paused, studying his profile in the moonlight – the sharp line of his jaw, the aquiline nose, the way his dark hair fell over his forehead. “Tell me, do you enjoy this? The endless schmoozing, the constant performative charm?”
Darian was silent for a long moment, his eyes on the distant shoreline. “It’s a necessary part of the game,” he said finally, his voice quiet. “To achieve what I have, to maintain it… it requires certain sacrifices. Certain compromises.” He turned to look at her, his blue eyes dark and unreadable. “But no, Valentina. I can’t say I enjoy it. Not truly.”
There was a vulnerability in his voice, a glimpse of the man behind the carefully constructed facade. It surprised her, this crack in his polished armor. She found herself wanting to ask more, to probe deeper, but the moment was shattered by the arrival of Mirella, her expression harried.
“Mr. Rohan, there’s a call for you. It’s urgent. From New York.”
Darian’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, but his voice was smooth as he replied. “Of course. Thank you, Mirella.” He turned to Valentina, his hand brushing her arm. “Will you excuse me for a few moments, my dear? Duty calls, I’m afraid.”
Valentina nodded, a pang of disappointment surprising her. “Of course.”
