Mirage of Monte Carlo
She watched him walk away, his tall figure disappearing into the interior of the yacht. The night suddenly seemed a little less bright, the laughter around her a little more grating. She took another sip of champagne, the bubbles suddenly tasting flat on her tongue.
“He’s a difficult man to understand, isn’t he?” a voice said beside her.
Valentina turned to find a woman standing nearby, a glass of champagne in her hand. She was beautiful, with sleek blonde hair and sharp green eyes, her body poured into a clinging red dress.
“Darian,” the woman clarified, nodding in the direction he’d disappeared. “He’s an enigma, wrapped in a very expensive suit.” She held out a perfectly manicured hand. “I’m Seraphina. Seraphina Bellamy. Darian and I are… old friends.”
Valentina took the offered hand, shaking it briefly. “Valentina Gabrielli. And yes, he is… complex.”
Seraphina laughed, a light, tinkling sound. “That’s one word for it.” She studied Valentina with a frank, appraising gaze. “You’re not his usual type, you know. Darian tends to favor women who are a little more… polished. A little less… unpredictable.”
Valentina bristled slightly, but kept her tone light. “Perhaps he’s decided to broaden his horizons.”
“Perhaps,” Seraphina mused, taking a delicate sip of champagne. “Or perhaps he’s found something in you that he hasn’t found in others.” She paused, her green eyes sharpening. “He’s a dangerous man to fall for, Valentina. He collects people like he collects companies. Uses them for what he needs, then discards them when they’ve served their purpose.”
Valentina met her gaze steadily. “Thank you for the warning, Ms. Bellamy. But I assure you, I have no intention of falling for Darian Rohan. This is strictly… business.”
Seraphina’s lips curved in a shrewd smile. “That’s what they all say, darling. That’s what they all say.” She drained the last of her champagne and set the empty glass on a passing waiter’s tray. “Well, I see my husband waving me over. Lovely to meet you, Valentina. Do try to enjoy the rest of your evening. And be careful. The waters around Darian tend to run quite deep.”
With a final, enigmatic smile, Seraphina glided away, leaving Valentina alone with her thoughts and the suddenly cloying scent of the roses in their silver vases.
The moon was high, casting long silver fingers across the dark water, as Valentina stood alone on the deck, the sounds of the party fading behind her. The encounter with Seraphina had left her feeling unsettled, the other woman’s words echoing in her mind. *He collects people… uses them… discards them.* Was that all she was to Darian? A temporary amusement, a means to an end?
She shivered, wrapping her arms around herself, the silk of her gown suddenly feeling thin and insubstantial against the cool night air. The champagne buzz had faded, leaving a faint headache pulsing behind her eyes. She wanted nothing more than to shed the elegant facade, to peel off the borrowed finery and return to her own skin, her own life.
“Hiding, Valentina?” Darian’s voice, smooth and low, sounded behind her, startling her system.
She turned, finding him standing a few feet away, his hands in the pockets of his tuxedo pants, his expression veiled in the moonlight. “I needed some air,” she said, her voice cool. “It was getting a bit… close in there.”
He moved closer, his eyes never leaving hers. “I noticed your… conversation with Seraphina. I trust she wasn’t too… enlightening?”
Valentina lifted her chin, meeting his gaze squarely. “Enlightening enough. She seems to know you quite well.”
Darian’s lips quirked in a humorless smile. “Seraphina likes to think she knows me. She’s made a habit of studying my… proclivities.” He took another step closer, his body now only inches from hers. “Did she warn you away from me, Valentina? Tell you what a dangerous creature I am?”
Valentina’s breath seized in her throat, her heart suddenly drumming against her ribs. “Something like that,” she managed, her voice quiet.
Darian reached out, his fingers grazing a stray tendril of hair from her cheek, his touch lingering on her skin. “And are you frightened, Valentina?” he murmured, his eyes dark and intense. “Do you think me a monster, come to devour you?”
Valentina’s throat tightened, her body trembling with a confusing mix of apprehension and desire. “I… I don’t know what to think,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I don’t know what this is… what we’re doing.”
Darian’s hand slid around to the back of her neck, his fingers weaving into her hair as he pulled her closer, his body pressing against hers. “Does it matter?” he breathed, his lips a hairsbreadth from hers. “Do you want me, Valentina? Even if it’s just for tonight?”
Valentina’s breath hitched, her body responding to his nearness, to the heat radiating from him. “Yes,” she whispered, the word torn from her throat. “God help me, yes.”
Darian’s mouth came down on hers, hot and demanding, his kiss devouring her. Valentina melted into him, her arms sliding around his neck, her body arching against his. The world fell away – the yacht, the party, Seraphina’s warnings – until there was nothing but the two of them, lost in a haze of heat and need.
They stumbled together into the library, their hands frantic, their mouths fused. Darian kicked the door shut behind them, pushing Valentina up against it, his body pressing her into the wood. His hands roamed her body, cupping her breasts through the silk of her gown, his thumbs brushing over her hardened nipples.
Valentina gasped, her fingers weaving into his hair, pulling him closer. She could feel the hard length of him pressing against her stomach, evidence of his desire, and it only fueled her own. She wanted him, desperately, with a ferocity that shocked her.
Darian pulled back slightly, his eyes dark and wild. “The bedroom,” he rasped, his tone urgent with need. “Now.”
He took her hand, leading her out of the library and down the corridor to the master suite. The room was vast, dominated by a king-sized bed draped in luxurious linens. Darian pulled her inside, shutting the door firmly behind them.
He turned to her, his eyes heavy-lidded with desire. “Take it off,” he commanded, his voice low and rough. “I want to see you.”
Valentina’s hands trembled as she reached for the zipper at the back of her gown, sliding it down. The silk pooled at her feet, leaving her standing in only her lacy underwear. Darian’s gaze swept over her, hot and hungry, making her skin prickle with awareness.
“Your turn,” she whispered, her voice throaty.
Darian shed his tuxedo with quick, efficient movements, until he stood before her in only his boxer briefs, his body a work of art – lean muscle and taut sinew, his skin pale and perfect in the moonlight filtering through the windows.
Valentina reached for him, her hands splaying over his chest, feeling the heat of his skin, the thunder of his heart. Darian pulled her against him, his mouth claiming hers again, his hands sliding down to cup her bottom, pulling her flush against his arousal.
They fell onto the bed together, limbs entwined and desperate kisses. Darian’s hands and mouth were everywhere, exploring every inch of her skin, leaving heated trails in their wake. Valentina arched against him, her fingers pressing into his shoulders, her body trembling with need.
When he finally entered her, she cried out, her body clenching around him. He moved inside her with a slow, deliberate rhythm, each thrust sending waves of pleasure crashing through her. Valentina met him stroke for stroke, her hips rising to meet his, her nails raking down his back.
Their lovemaking was fierce and primal, a clash of bodies and wills. But as the pleasure built, as the world contracted to the slide of skin on skin, something changed. The frantic urgency gave way to a deeper, more profound connection. Darian’s movements slowed, becoming tender, almost reverent. He cupped Valentina’s face in his hands, his thumbs brushing her cheekbones, his eyes holding hers.
Valentina felt a surge of emotion, a terrifying vulnerability that had nothing to do with the physical act. In that moment, she saw past the polished facade, past the ruthless billionaire, to the man beneath. A man who was just as lost, just as lonely, as she was.
They came together, their cries mingling in the quiet of the room, their bodies shuddering with the force of their shared release. Afterward, they lay entwined together, their breathing slowly evening out, their skin damp with sweat.
Darian pulled her into his arms, his chin resting on the top of her head. “Valentina,” he murmured, his voice unsteady with feeling. “What are you doing to me?”
Valentina closed her eyes, nestling closer into his embrace. She didn’t have an answer. All she knew was that in his arms, she felt seen. She felt real. And it terrified her.
