Maita unbuttoned it with deliberate care. She pushed the fabric from Nieves’s shoulders and let it fall onto the sofa. Her palms came to Nieves’s breasts only after another question and another yes. She cupped them, thumbs moving over tightened nipples until Nieves gave a small sound into Maita’s mouth.
“Sit,” Nieves said.
“Here?”
“On the sofa. I want to see you.”
Maita sat. Nieves stood between her knees while Maita opened the fastening of her trousers and drew them down with her underwear. The lamp light found the wetness already gathered between Nieves’s thighs.
“May I open your legs?” Maita asked.
“Yes.”
Maita guided her onto the sofa, then lowered herself to the floor. She kissed the inside of Nieves’s thigh before she put her mouth over her clitoris. Nieves’s hand closed around the sofa cushion as Maita licked her in slow, exact strokes.
“That,” Nieves said. “Stay there.”
Maita stayed. Her tongue worked the swollen nub with steady pressure while one hand held Nieves’s thigh open. When Nieves lifted two fingers, Maita looked up.
“One,” Nieves said. “Start with one.”
Maita slicked her finger against Nieves’s cunt and eased it inside. She curled it gently, watching Nieves rather than guessing. Nieves moved her hips forward.
“More pressure,” she said. “At my clit. Keep your mouth there.”
Maita obeyed. Her finger moved in a patient rhythm while her mouth kept Nieves open and slick. Pleasure gathered fast, no longer sharpened by being seen but by being answered. Nieves’s thighs tightened around Maita’s shoulder. Her cunt clenched around the finger inside her, each pulse pulling another sound from her.
“Maita—yes.”
Maita held the rhythm until Nieves came hard, her body folding forward over the sofa edge. She did not rush away. She waited until Nieves touched her hair and said, “Come up.”
Maita rose, her mouth wet, her dress still on.
“My turn,” Nieves said.
Maita smiled. “Tell me what you want.”
“Take that off. Sit on the edge.”
Maita drew the dress over her head and dropped it beside Nieves’s clothes. She sat where directed, naked beneath the lamps, knees apart. The familiar sight struck differently without glass between them. Nieves could reach her now. She could make Maita react and feel it beneath her own hands.
“Do you want my mouth?” Nieves asked.
“Yes.”
Nieves knelt before her. She ran her palms up Maita’s thighs, then opened her with both hands and kissed her cunt. Maita’s hips lifted at once.
“Slow,” Maita said. “Please.”
Nieves slowed. She licked through the wetness, took Maita’s clitoris into her mouth, then eased one finger inside her.
“Is that enough?”
“Two.”
Nieves added a second finger and moved them together while her tongue circled Maita’s clitoris. Maita’s hand found the back of the sofa. Her other hand rested in Nieves’s hair without pressing, waiting for permission it did not need to ask aloud.
“Harder,” Maita said. “Don’t stop there.”
Nieves gave her what she asked for. Her fingers drove deeper, then curled. Her mouth kept its pace. Maita’s thighs shook around Nieves’s shoulders. She came with Nieves’s name breaking from her in short, clear pieces, her cunt closing firmly around Nieves’s hand.
Nieves stayed until Maita’s body settled.
Then she stood and looked down at her. “Do you want more?”
Maita reached for her hand. “Not yet. Come here.”
“Do you want me to hold you?”
“Yes.”
Nieves climbed beside her on the sofa. Maita drew her close, naked bodies pressed together under the two oil lamps, the frosted panel still guarding the room from every other pair of eyes.
“Don’t go yet,” Maita said.
“Not yet,” Nieves answered.
Maita stayed beside her for another minute, one arm laid loosely across Nieves’s waist. Then she asked, “Water?”
“Yes.”
“May I get up?”
“Yes.”
Maita rose from the sofa and crossed to the low cabinet. The lamps made small pools of light on her shoulders. She returned with two tumblers, a glass carafe, and a stack of clean white towels. One towel went beneath Nieves’s hip before Maita passed her water.
“Drink first,” she said. “Then I’ll ask anything else.”
Nieves drank. The water was cool enough to clear the taste of salt from her mouth.
“Can I clean you up?” Maita asked.
“Yes. Slowly.”
Maita used the damp towel with care, cleaning oil and wetness from the inside of Nieves’s thighs without turning the attention into another invitation. When she finished, she set a dry towel over Nieves’s lap and took one for herself.
Nieves watched her dress herself in nothing but the lamp light. “I thought I would feel exposed afterward.”
Maita looked up. “Do you?”
“No.” Nieves held the towel against her belly. “That’s the strange part. The chair, the glass, that stupid brass slot—it made me feel chosen.”
“Chosen is good?”
“Chosen by you. And chosen by me.” Nieves considered the difference. “That is not the same as being displayed.”
Maita sat on the edge of the long table. “I wanted you to know that distinction. I do not make rooms for people to wander into. I make a place where every person has a job and an exit.”
“Then we need to talk about the reservation ledger.”
Maita’s mouth bent with brief amusement. “Very romantic administration.”
“Celia knows my member number. She knows yours too.”
“Celia makes stories from soup menus.”
“She may still notice if we keep booking the same late hours.”
Maita grew serious. “Tomorrow, we ask Renata exactly what other members can inspect. No favors. No secret workaround. If the ledger is not private enough, we stop booking.”
Nieves let that settle. “One booking at a time, then. No series. No pattern somebody can chart.”
“No artist statement,” Maita added.
“Thank God. I spend all day rescuing paper from people who wrote too much on it.”
Maita laughed, low and bright. “No labels.”
“Except the cards.”
“Plain cards,” Maita said. “Useful ones.”
They moved to the table together. Maita found a packet of blank stock in the cabinet drawer, along with a ruler, pencil, and three colored pencils worn down from use. Nieves wrote in her small, careful hand while Maita drew clean borders around each instruction.
The green cards read WATCH and PERFORM.
The amber cards read PAUSE and SPEAK.
The red card read LEAVE.
Below it, Nieves printed: NO EXPLANATION REQUIRED. DO NOT FOLLOW.
On the reverse of every card, Maita added: NO TOUCHING, ENTRY, OR CHANGE TO THE GLASS WITHOUT WORDS.
Nieves studied the row. “If we make these too pretty, you’ll frame them.”
“I would never.”
“You absolutely would.”
Maita set the pencil down. “May I sit close?”
“Yes.”
She took the place beside Nieves on the sofa and rested her palm on Nieves’s knee only after asking again. Nothing followed from it except that contact, steady and simple.
Before dawn, the cards waited in a neat stack on the table. Nieves read the red one once more and felt calmer because it was there.
At their next booking, Renata had placed them in the ledger under separate entry times and the ordinary title of private suite use. Nieves liked the blandness of it. Nothing in a line of careful handwriting had to explain what belonged only to them.
She entered by the performer’s route with a record sleeve tucked under her arm. Maita was already visible through the frosted panel, seated in the chair in a pale linen shirt and dark trousers. Two oil lamps waited unlit. She raised a hand when Nieves unlocked her door.
Nieves set the sleeve on the turntable. In blue pencil, she had written DITO SA ILAW. It was an old pressing she had found at a shop near Cubao, all patient guitar and a singer who knew how to let a note finish before taking another.
The final card of their new set lay at the brass slot.
GREEN ONE AUDIENCE MEMBER ONE CHOSEN PERFORMANCE NO ONE OWED ANOTHER ANYTHING AFTER
Nieves turned it over. GREEN appeared there too, in Maita’s tidy block letters.
She laughed, quiet but unable to stop it.
Maita lifted the same card from her side of the glass. “We have made a very serious game out of this.”
“We have made it safe enough to play.”
“That is worse,” Maita said, smiling. “Now I like you even more.”
Nieves looked at her. “I like you too.”
Maita set the card against the panel. “Do you want to perform tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want me to watch?”
“Yes.”
“Clear glass?”
“Yes. And if either of us changes her mind, we stop.”
“Agreed.”
Nieves lit the first lamp, then the second. The small flames made the polished brass shine. She turned the lever. Frost withdrew from the glass, and Maita came clear in the chair, card still held at her knee.
Nieves placed the double-green card beside the lamps, where it caught neither woman’s reflection. It did not promise forever. It did something Nieves trusted more: it asked again.
She lowered the needle onto the record. Guitar crossed the room. With Maita seated there, smiling and attentive, Nieves touched the first button of her shirt and began.
