The Amber Rule

Loving WivesComplete

Christy took a deep breath, her fingers brushing the amber pendant for reassurance. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” She scanned the room, her heart skipping a beat as she caught sight of Ralph Reed near the bar, his dark hair and broad shoulders unmistakable even after all these years. “There he is.”

Daniel followed her gaze, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly. “Just remember the rules,” he said, his voice low. “Our marriage comes first. No secrets.”

Christy nodded, squeezing his hand. “I remember.” She took a step forward, then hesitated, turning back to Daniel with a soft smile. “Wish me luck?”

He leaned in, his lips brushing her ear. “You don’t need luck, Ev. You’ve got this.” His breath was warm against her skin, sending a shiver down her spine. “Just be careful.”

She nodded again, then turned and made her way towards Ralph, her heart pounding in her chest. The amber pendant felt heavy against her throat, a tangible reminder of Daniel’s love and trust. She could feel his eyes on her as she walked, the weight of his gaze both comforting and electrifying.

Ralph turned as she approached, his brown eyes lighting up with recognition. “Christy Whitlock,” he said, his voice warm and rich. “I was hoping I’d run into you tonight.” He leaned in, pressing a kiss to her cheek, his hand lingering on her arm for just a beat too long. “You look stunning.”

Christy felt a flush rise to her cheeks, her skin tingling where he’d touched her. “Ralph,” she said, her voice a little breathless. “It’s been too long. How have you been?”

“Can’t complain,” he said, flashing her a grin that was all straight white teeth and boyish charm. “Business is good, life is good.” His gaze flicked to the amber pendant at her throat, his eyebrows lifting slightly. “That’s a beautiful necklace. New?”

Christy’s hand went to the pendant, her fingers brushing the smooth, warm stone. “Not new,” she said, her eyes flicking across the room to where Daniel stood watching them, his expression unreadable. “A gift from Daniel. It’s… special to us.”

Ralph followed her gaze, his smile turning knowing. “Ah, the lucky man,” he said, his voice teasing. “I was sorry to hear he couldn’t make it tonight.” He turned back to Christy, his brown eyes locking onto hers. “Guess I’ll just have to keep you company instead.”

Christy’s heart skipped a beat, her pulse quickening at the implication in his words. She could feel Daniel’s eyes on her, watching, waiting, and it only heightened the thrill. “I’m sure Daniel will be along later,” she said, her voice a little unsteady. “He had some work to finish up first.”

“His loss,” Ralph said, his grin widening. He held out his arm to her, his gaze warm and inviting. “Shall we find a quieter spot to catch up? This crowd is a bit much.”

Christy hesitated for only a moment before sliding her arm through his, the amber pendant glinting between them. “Lead the way,” she said, her voice low.

They made their way through the crowd, Ralph’s hand resting lightly on the small of her back as he guided her towards the patio doors. Christy could feel the heat of his touch through the thin fabric of her dress, her skin prickling with awareness. She glanced back at Daniel, who was still watching them, his blue eyes dark and intense behind his glasses.

Once outside, the noise of the party faded to a low hum, the night air cool and sweet with the scent of jasmine. Ralph led her to a quiet corner of the patio, the lights of the city twinkling in the distance. “So,” he said, turning to face her, his brown eyes glinting in the low light. “Tell me everything. How have you been? How’s life with Daniel?”

Christy took a deep breath, her fingers brushing the amber pendant for courage. “Life is good,” she said, her voice a little unsteady. “Work is busy, but fulfilling. Daniel is… wonderful.” She met Ralph’s gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. “But I’d rather hear about you. I saw that piece in Forbes last month. Your company is doing amazing things.”

Ralph waved a hand, his grin turning self-deprecating. “We’ve been lucky,” he said, his eyes never leaving hers. “But I’d rather talk about you.” He took a step closer, his hand reaching out to tuck a stray lock of auburn hair behind her ear. “I’ve always regretted that we lost touch after college. You were… special to me, Christy.”

Christy’s breath caught in her throat, her skin tingling where he’d touched her. “I regretted it too,” she said softly, her eyes flicking to the amber pendant, then back to Ralph’s face. “But life has a way of getting in the way sometimes.”

“It does,” Ralph agreed, his gaze dropping to her lips for a fleeting moment before meeting her eyes again. “But maybe it’s not too late to reconnect.” He took another step closer, his body brushing lightly against hers. “I’ve always wondered, Ev. What might have happened between us if things had been different.”

Christy’s heart was racing now, her body thrumming with a heady mix of arousal and nerves. She could feel Daniel watching them from inside, his gaze a physical weight on her skin. The amber pendant felt hot against her throat, a brand and a promise all at once. “I’ve wondered that too,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ralph’s hand slid down her arm, his fingers tangling with hers. “Have dinner with me,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “Tomorrow night. Let’s see if there’s still a spark between us.”

Christy’s breath hitched, her mind racing. This was it. The moment she’d been fantasizing about for months, the chance to explore something new and forbidden. But Daniel’s face flashed in her mind, his blue eyes serious as he’d laid out their rules. Our marriage comes first. No secrets. She took a deep breath, her fingers tightening around the amber pendant. “I can’t,” she said, her voice firmer than she felt. “I’m married, Ralph. I love my husband.”

Ralph’s face fell for a moment, but he recovered quickly, his grin turning rueful. “I understand,” he said, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “I shouldn’t have asked. I just… seeing you tonight, it brought back a lot of memories.”

Christy nodded, her heart aching a little at the disappointment in his eyes. “It did for me too,” she said softly. “But my life is with Daniel now. He’s my everything.”

“I get that,” Ralph said, his smile turning genuine. “I admire that. Loyalty is rare these days.” He brought her hand to his lips, pressing a soft kiss to her knuckles. “I’m glad you’re happy, Ev. You deserve it.”

“Thank you,” Christy said, her voice thick with emotion. She squeezed his hand once more before letting it go, the amber pendant cool against her skin. “It was wonderful to see you, Ralph. Truly.”

“You too,” he said, his brown eyes warm as he gazed down at her. “Maybe we can do this again sometime. As friends.”

“I’d like that,” Christy said, her smile genuine. She took a step back, her eyes flicking towards the patio doors. “I should get back to the party. Daniel will be wondering where I am.”

Ralph nodded, his grin turning knowing. “Of course,” he said, his gaze flicking to the amber pendant one last time. “Take care, Christy. And tell Daniel I said hello.”

“I will,” she promised. Then she turned and made her way back inside, her heart pounding in her chest. The amber pendant felt heavy against her throat, a reminder of the promise she’d made to Daniel, to herself. She found him waiting for her near the bar, his blue eyes dark and intense behind his glasses.

“Everything okay?” he asked, his voice low as he handed her a glass of wine.

Christy took it gratefully, her fingers brushing his. “Everything’s fine,” she said, her voice a little breathless. “Ralph and I just caught up for a bit. It was nice.”

Daniel’s gaze flicked to the patio doors, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly. “He seems… interested,” he said, his voice carefully neutral.

Christy nodded, taking a sip of her wine. “He is,” she admitted. “He asked me to dinner tomorrow night.”

Daniel’s eyes snapped to hers, his expression unreadable. “And what did you say?”

“I said no,” Christy said softly, her free hand coming up to touch the amber pendant. “I told him I was married. That I love my husband.”

Daniel’s shoulders relaxed slightly, his gaze warming as he looked down at her. “I’m glad,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. “But I wouldn’t have blamed you if you’d said yes, Ev. This was the whole point, wasn’t it? To explore something new?”
