The Last Night at the Lingerie Chest
We collapse together onto the chaise, our bodies slick with sweat. Aris wraps his arms around me, holding me close. We lie there for a long moment, catching our breath, basking in the afterglow.
"Wow," Aris murmurs, his lips brushing my temple. "That was…"
"Amazing," I finish, smiling against his chest. "Absolutely amazing."
We doze for a while, wrapped in each other’s arms, the shop quiet around us. When I wake, the first pale light of dawn is filtering through the windows. The antique clock on the wall reads 5:58 AM. Two minutes until the lease expires, until the Lingerie Chest is no longer mine.
I rise from the chaise, careful not to wake Aris. I find my lace robe on the floor, slipping it on over the chemise. The silk is cool against my skin, a reminder of the night we’ve shared. I move quietly through the shop, running my fingers over the empty shelves, the bare display cases. Five years of my life, gone in the space of a single night.
But I’m not sad. Not anymore. Because I’m not leaving this shop the same man who walked in yesterday. I’m leaving as someone new. Someone true. Someone whole.
I pause before the ornate mirror, taking in my reflection. The chemise and robe are a bit rumpled, my hair is mussed, but my eyes are clear, my smile genuine. I look like myself. My true self.
"I am wind," I murmur, repeating Aris’s poem. "I am water. I am the truth your heart has always known."
I turn away from the mirror, ready to face the day. Aris is awake now, watching me from the chaise. He smiles, his eyes soft with understanding. "Time to go?" he asks.
I nod, holding out my hand to him. "Time to go."
Hand in hand, we step out of the Lingerie Chest for the last time. The air is crisp and cool, the street quiet in the early morning light. I pause on the sidewalk, turning to look back at the shop. The sign in the window reads "CLOSED" in bold letters. The end of an era.
But also the start of something new.
I turn away, facing the street. The city is waking up around us, the first commuters trickling out of their apartments. I take a deep breath, squaring my shoulders. Then, without a backward glance, I start walking, Aris’s hand warm and steady in mine.
I am wind. I am water. I am the truth your heart has always known.
The chemise whispers against my skin beneath my coat, a secret only I know. A truth only I can tell.
I am ready.
