The Longest Yard

Liam nods, a lump forming in his throat. “Damn right we are.”

They sit in silence for a long moment, the city sprawling out before them, the weight of their shared journey heavy between them. In that moment, they are not rivals, not enemies. They are just two men, two athletes, united by their love of the game and their determination to overcome the odds.

The moment passes, the sun dipping below the horizon, the sky fading to black. They rise from their chairs, the spell broken, the reality of their situation crashing back down around them.

But something has changed, something fundamental. The fake friendship they’ve been selling to the public has begun to feel real, the bond between them growing stronger with each passing day.

Liam can feel it, a warmth in his chest, a lightness in his step. He knows it’s dangerous, knows it could derail everything they’ve worked for. But he can’t bring himself to pull away, to put the walls back up.

For the first time in his life, Liam Carter is starting to feel something other than competition for Alex Rivera. He’s starting to feel respect, admiration, even affection.

And it terrifies him.

The next morning, they return to the rehab suite, the routine of their recovery a welcome distraction from the turmoil in Liam’s head. Dr. Chen puts them through their paces, her watchful eye missing nothing as they push their bodies to the limit.

“Looking good, gentlemen,” she says as they finish a set of squats, her voice warm with approval. “Your progress has been remarkable.”

Liam nods, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Feels good to be making headway.”

Alex grins, his shoulder moving more freely than it has in weeks. “Damn good.”

They share a look, a moment of shared triumph, before Dr. Chen claps her hands, breaking the spell. “Alright, that’s enough for today. Hit the showers, and don’t forget to ice.”

They make their way back to their suite, the silence between them comfortable now, easy. Liam finds himself watching Alex out of the corner of his eye, studying the lines of his face, the way his body moves.

“You ever think about what comes next?” Alex asks suddenly, his voice quiet. “After all this, I mean.”

Liam shrugs, keeping his eyes on the path ahead. “I try not to. One day at a time, you know?”

Alex nods, his expression thoughtful. “Yeah, I guess that’s the way to do it.”

But Liam can see the uncertainty in his eyes, the same uncertainty that lurks in his own heart. The future is a blank slate, a question mark hanging over both their heads.

“We’ll figure it out,” Liam says finally, his voice firm. “Together.”

Alex looks at him, surprise flickering across his face. “Together?”

Liam nods, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Yeah. Together.”

The next few weeks pass in a blur of rehab sessions and public appearances, the fake friendship they’ve been selling to the world slowly becoming something more. They laugh together, tease each other, share moments of vulnerability that would have been unthinkable just a few short months ago.

Liam finds himself looking forward to their time together, to the easy camaraderie that has developed between them. He finds himself seeking out Alex’s company, lingering in the rehab suite long after their sessions have ended, just to spend a few more minutes in his presence.

It’s a dangerous game they’re playing, a line they’re skirting closer and closer to crossing. Liam knows it, can feel the weight of it in the air between them, but he can’t bring himself to pull away. He’s drawn to Alex like a moth to a flame, helpless to resist the pull of his gravity.

One night, long after the rest of the facility has gone to sleep, Liam finds himself unable to settle, his mind racing with thoughts of the future, of the uncertain path that lies ahead. He slips out of bed and pads quietly to the rehab suite, hoping to burn off some of his restless energy with a few extra reps.

To his surprise, he finds Alex already there, sitting on the edge of one of the therapy tables, his eyes closed and his shoulders slumped. He looks exhausted, his face pale and drawn in the dim light of the room.

“Couldn’t sleep?” Liam asks quietly, his voice startling Alex from his thoughts.

Alex looks up, his expression guarded. “No. You?”

Liam shakes his head, crossing the room to join him on the table. “Nope.”

They sit in silence for a long moment, the hum of the machines the only sound in the room. Liam can feel the heat of Alex’s body beside him, the solid warmth of his presence. He shifts slightly, his thigh brushing against Alex’s, a spark of electricity arcing between them.

Alex tenses beside him, his breath catching in his throat. Liam can see the pulse fluttering in his neck, the rapid rise and fall of his chest. He knows he should pull away, should put some distance between them, but he can’t bring himself to move.

“You’ve been doing really well,” Liam says finally, his voice rough with emotion. “With your rehab, I mean. I’m… I’m proud of you.”

Alex turns to look at him, his eyes wide and dark in the shadows. “I’m proud of you too,” he says, his voice just as rough. “You’ve come so far.”

Liam nods, a lump forming in his throat. “We both have.”

Another moment of silence stretches between them, heavy with unspoken words. Liam can feel his heart pounding in his chest, his blood rushing in his ears. He knows he’s standing on the edge of a precipice, knows that one wrong move could send him tumbling over the edge.

But he can’t bring himself to care. Not in this moment, not with Alex so close, his presence so overwhelming.

“Liam,” Alex says softly, his voice a plea.

Liam turns to him, his eyes searching Alex’s face in the darkness. “Yeah?”

“I… I don’t know what’s happening,” Alex whispers, his voice raw with emotion. “Between us, I mean. I don’t know what this is.”

Liam shakes his head, his throat tight. “I don’t either.”

Another beat of silence, another moment of hesitation. And then, before he can stop himself, before he can think better of it, Liam is leaning in, his lips brushing against Alex’s in a kiss that is both tentative and desperate.

Alex freezes beside him, his body going rigid with shock. For one heart-stopping moment, Liam is sure he’s made a terrible mistake, sure that Alex will pull away and put an end to this madness once and for all.

But then, slowly, hesitantly, Alex is kissing him back, his lips moving against Liam’s with a fervor that steals the breath from Liam’s lungs. It’s a kiss unlike any Liam has ever experienced, a kiss that is both gentle and fierce, both tentative and all-consuming.

Liam feels himself sinking into it, losing himself in the feel of Alex’s lips against his, the taste of him on his tongue. He feels Alex’s hands come up to tangle in his hair, feels the heat of his body pressing against his own.
