The Longest Yard

It’s a moment of pure, unadulterated want, a moment of reckless abandon that Liam knows he will never forget. It’s a moment that changes everything.

And then, just as suddenly as it began, it’s over, Alex pulling away with a gasp, his eyes wide and panicked in the darkness.

“I… I’m sorry,” he stammers, his voice shaking. “I shouldn’t have… I didn’t mean to…”

Liam shakes his head, his own voice unsteady. “Don’t. Don’t apologize.”

Alex looks at him, his expression torn. “But… what does this mean? What happens now?”

Liam takes a deep breath, his heart still pounding in his chest. “I don’t know,” he admits quietly. “I don’t know what any of this means.”

Alex nods, his eyes dropping to his lap. “Okay. Okay.”

They sit in silence for a long moment, the weight of what has just happened heavy between them. Liam can feel the uncertainty in the air, the fear that this could change everything, that it could ruin everything they’ve worked so hard to build.

“We should… we should get some sleep,” Alex says finally, his voice rough with exhaustion and emotion. “We’ve got an early start tomorrow.”

Liam nods, pushing himself to his feet. “Yeah. You’re right.”

He turns to go, but Alex’s voice stops him before he can take a step. “Liam?”

He looks back, his eyes meeting Alex’s in the darkness. “Yeah?”

“Thank you. For… for being here. For being you.”

Liam feels a smile tug at the corner of his mouth, a warmth spreading through his chest. “Anytime, Alex. Anytime.”

He slips out of the room, leaving Alex alone in the darkness. As he makes his way back to his bed, Liam can’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration, a sense of possibility that he hasn’t felt in years.

He knows the road ahead will be difficult, knows that there will be obstacles and challenges and moments of doubt. But for the first time in a long time, Liam feels like he’s not facing it alone.

He has Alex by his side, and that makes all the difference in the world.

The next morning, Liam wakes with a start, the memory of the kiss still fresh in his mind. He can feel the phantom pressure of Alex’s lips against his own, can taste the faint hint of salt on his tongue. It’s a distraction he can’t afford, not with the regular season looming and his team counting on him to be at his best.

He rolls out of bed and pads to the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face in an attempt to clear his head. In the mirror, he looks tired, his eyes shadowed and his jaw tight with tension. He knows he needs to get his head in the game, to focus on the task at hand.

But how can he, when all he can think about is Alex?

He makes his way to the rehab suite, his mind still reeling from the events of the night before. To his relief, Alex is already there, stretching on one of the mats. He looks up as Liam enters, his expression guarded.

“Morning,” he says, his voice carefully neutral.

Liam nods, crossing the room to join him. “Morning.”

They warm up in silence, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Liam can feel the weight of Alex’s gaze on his skin, can see the questions in his eyes. He knows they need to talk, to address what happened between them, but he doesn’t know how to start.

It’s Dr. Chen who breaks the silence, bustling into the room with her usual brisk efficiency. “Alright, gentlemen, let’s get to work. We’ve got a big day ahead of us.”

Liam and Alex exchange a glance, the moment between them broken. They fall into the familiar routine of their rehab exercises, pushing their bodies to the limit under Dr. Chen’s watchful eye.

As they work, Liam can’t help but steal glances at Alex, watching the way his muscles flex and bunch as he moves. He’s captivated by the other man’s strength, by the sheer force of will that drives him forward. He’s never met anyone quite like Alex, anyone who can match his own determination step for step.

It’s a feeling that unsettles him, that throws him off balance. He’s always been the one in control, the one who sets the pace. But with Alex, he feels like he’s constantly playing catch-up, constantly trying to keep his footing on shifting ground.

It’s a feeling he doesn’t entirely dislike.

They finish their session a few hours later, their bodies aching and their minds exhausted. As they make their way back to their suite, Liam can feel the tension between them growing, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air.

“We need to talk,” Alex says finally, his voice low.

Liam nods, his heart pounding in his chest. “Yeah. We do.”

They retreat to the privacy of their shared living room, the door clicking shut behind them. Liam takes a seat on the couch, his hands clasped between his knees. Alex remains standing, pacing the length of the room like a caged animal.

“About last night…” Alex starts, his voice hesitant.

Liam looks up, meeting his gaze. “Yeah?”

Alex stops pacing, turning to face him. “I… I don’t regret it. Kissing you, I mean. I know I should, but I don’t.”

Liam feels a wave of relief wash over him, so strong it nearly knocks him off balance. “I don’t either.”

Alex nods, his expression serious. “But we can’t… we can’t let it happen again. Not now, not with the season starting.”

Liam nods, his heart sinking. “I know. You’re right.”

“It’s too complicated,” Alex continues, his voice firm. “Too risky. If anyone found out…”

He trails off, shaking his head. Liam knows he’s right, knows that the stakes are too high. If their relationship were to become public, it could ruin both their careers, could destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to build.

But knowing that doesn’t make it any easier to accept.

“We’ll keep it professional,” Liam says, his voice tight. “Focus on the game, on getting back to where we need to be.”

Alex nods, his jaw clenched. “Agreed.”

They lapse into silence, the weight of their decision heavy between them. Liam can feel the distance between them growing, the wall that had begun to crumble rebuilding itself brick by brick.

It’s a necessary evil, he knows. A sacrifice they have to make for the sake of their careers, for the sake of the game they both love. But that doesn’t make it hurt any less.

The next few weeks pass in a blur of training and preparation, the regular season hurtling towards them with alarming speed. Liam throws himself into his work, pushing his body to the limit and beyond. He knows he needs to be at his best if he wants to lead his team to victory, if he wants to prove to himself and to everyone else that he’s still the quarterback he once was.

But even as he focuses on his recovery, he can’t shake the memory of that kiss, the feel of Alex’s lips against his own. It haunts him, taunts him, a constant reminder of what he’s had to give up.

He sees Alex every day in the rehab suite, their interactions now carefully polite and distant. They talk about their progress, about their training, about the upcoming season. They never mention what happened between them, never acknowledge the tension that still simmers beneath the surface.

It’s a fragile truce, a temporary ceasefire in the war that has raged between them for years. But Liam knows it can’t last, knows that something will have to give.

The first game of the regular season arrives, the New York Titans facing off against the Los Angeles Chargers in a matchup that has the entire league buzzing. Liam and Alex are slated to start, their comeback stories adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already highly anticipated game.

As Liam steps out onto the field, he can feel the roar of the crowd washing over him, the familiar rush of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He’s been here before, countless times, but somehow, this feels different. This feels bigger, more important than any game he’s ever played.

He spots Alex across the field, his Chargers jersey a stark contrast to Liam’s own Titans colors. Even from a distance, Liam can see the determination in Alex’s eyes, the fierce competitiveness that drives him forward.

For a moment, their eyes meet, and Liam feels a jolt of electricity arc between them, a spark of something he can’t quite name. It’s gone as quickly as it appears, Alex turning away to join his teammates, but the echo of it lingers, a phantom sensation that Liam can’t shake.
