The Sea Prince's Bargain
“There’s something I need to show you, Kael,” he says, his voice a low murmur that vibrates in my bones. “Something that belongs to both of us.”
I frown, my mind racing with possibilities. “What is it?” I ask, my voice tight with anticipation.
Aris smiles, a rare, genuine smile that lights up his face. “You’ll see,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones.
He takes my hand again, and leads me out of the grotto, back through the winding corridors of the castle. Finn follows close behind, his small body trembling with exhaustion, but his eyes bright with curiosity.
Aris leads me to a part of the castle I’ve never seen before, a vast, open chamber filled with a soft, silver light. In the center of the chamber, there’s a pool of water, its surface still and calm.
“What is this place?” I ask, my voice hushed with awe.
Aris smiles, his expression serene. “This is the heart of the Sea Court,” he says, his voice a low murmur that vibrates in my bones. “The source of our magic, our power.”
He leads me to the edge of the pool, and we kneel down beside it, our hands joined, our magic weaving together. As we kneel there, I feel a sense of peace, of belonging, that I’ve never felt before.
And then, slowly, the water in the pool begins to glow, a soft, silver light that grows brighter and brighter until it fills the entire chamber. I gasp, my eyes widening with wonder, as the light coalesces into a shape, a symbol that I recognize instantly.
It’s the same symbol that’s etched into our scars, the same symbol that glows with power whenever we join our magic. It’s a symbol of our bond, our love, our destiny.
I look up at Aris, my heart swelling with emotion, with a love I never thought I’d feel. “It’s beautiful,” I whisper, my voice hoarse with emotion.
Aris nods, his expression serious. “It’s ours, Kael,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. “A symbol of our union, our love.”
He reaches out, his fingers brushing over the scar on my shoulder, and I shiver at the touch, a spark of something hot and wild igniting in my veins. “This scar is a part of us, Kael,” he murmurs, his voice a low caress. “A part of our story, our destiny.”
I nod, my heart pounding against my ribs, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps. “I know,” I say, my voice soft but firm. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Aris smiles, a rare, genuine smile that lights up his face. “Neither would I,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones.
He leans in, his lips brushing over mine in a soft, sweet kiss, and I feel a sense of peace, of rightness, that I’ve never felt before. This is where I belong, at Aris’s side, our magic and our love intertwined, our scars a symbol of our bond.
And with that bond, that love, that magic, we will face whatever challenges come our way, together, as one.
As we kneel there, our hands joined, our magic weaving together, I feel a sense of peace, of belonging, that I’ve never felt before. But it’s a peace that is short-lived.
Suddenly, a tremor shakes the very foundations of the castle, a violent, wrenching motion that sends us stumbling back from the pool. Aris grabs my arm, steadying me, his expression hardening with alarm.
“What was that?” I ask, my voice tight with fear.
Before Aris can answer, a fae guard swims into the chamber, his face pale, his eyes wide with panic. “My prince,” he gasps, his voice rough with exertion. “Lord Malakai’s forces have regrouped. They’re attacking the castle.”
Aris’s face hardens, his eyes flashing with anger. “Malakai,” he snarls, his voice a low growl that vibrates in my bones. “I should have known he wouldn’t give up so easily.”
He turns to me, his expression grim. “Kael, I need you to stay here,” he says, his voice a low command. “I need you to be safe.”
I shake my head, my own anger rising to meet his. “No,” I say, my voice firm, unyielding. “I won’t let you face this alone. I won’t let you fight my battles for me.”
Aris opens his mouth to argue, but I cut him off with a slash of my hand. “I am your fated mate, Aris,” I say, my voice low and intense. “I am meant to stand by your side, to fight with you, to defend our home. I won’t be left behind.”
Aris stares at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he nods, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Very well,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. “We fight together.”
He takes my hand, his fingers warm and solid against mine, and leads me out of the chamber, back through the winding corridors of the castle. Finn follows close behind, his small body tense with anticipation.
As we swim, Aris fills me in on Lord Malakai, a rival fae lord who has long coveted the power of the Sea Court. “He’s ruthless,” Aris says, his voice a low murmur that vibrates in my bones. “He’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.”
I nod, my mind racing with strategies, with plans. “We’ll stop him,” I say, my voice firm with conviction. “Together.”
We emerge into the open water just as the first wave of Malakai’s forces strike. They’re a terrifying sight, an army of fae warriors armed with tridents and swords, their eyes glowing with a sickly green light.
Aris raises his hand, his magic surging to his call, and a wall of water rises up before us, blocking the attackers’ path. But it’s not enough. Malakai’s forces are too strong, their magic too powerful.
They break through the wall as if it were made of paper, surging towards us with a roar of triumph. Aris meets them head-on, his trident flashing in the dim light, his magic crackling around him like a storm at sea.
I follow close behind, my own magic rising to my call, a warm, tingling energy that flows through my veins, pooling in my fingertips. I unleash it in a torrent of power, a wave of force that sends a dozen fae warriors tumbling back, their weapons flying from their hands.
But still, they keep coming, their numbers seemingly endless. Aris and I fight back-to-back, our magic weaving together, strengthening each other, driving back the attackers.
Finn darts between us, his small body a blur of motion, his teeth bared in a snarl. He may be small, but he’s fierce, a whirlwind of fury that takes down fae warriors twice his size.
For a time, it seems as if we might prevail, as if our combined magic might be enough to turn the tide. But then Malakai himself enters the fray, his eyes glowing with a sickly green light, his magic a palpable force that sets the very water around him boiling.
He raises his hand, his fingers curling into a fist, and a bolt of green lightning shoots towards us, crackling with malevolent energy. Aris throws up a shield of water, but it’s not enough. The lightning tears through it like tissue paper, slamming into Aris’s chest, sending him flying back.
“Aris!” I scream, my voice raw with fear. I swim to his side, my hands shaking as I reach for him, my magic surging to his call.
He’s hurt, badly. His chest is a mass of burned flesh, his eyes glazed with pain. But he’s still alive, still fighting. He grabs my hand, his fingers weak but determined.
“Kael,” he rasps, his voice a hoarse whisper. “You have to stop him. You’re the only one who can.”
I shake my head, my heart pounding against my ribs. “I can’t,” I say, my voice hoarse with fear. “I’m not strong enough.”
“You are,” Aris says, his voice a low murmur that vibrates in my bones. “You’re stronger than you know. Stronger than Malakai. Stronger than anyone.”
He reaches up, his fingers brushing over the scar on my shoulder, and I gasp as a surge of power flows through me, a wild, untamed force that sets my very bones vibrating. “Embrace your magic, Kael,” Aris murmurs, his voice a low caress. “Embrace your destiny.”
I close my eyes, my body trembling, my magic raging inside me like a storm at sea. I think of Aris, of the love we share, the bond we’ve forged. I think of Lirelle, of the promise I made to save her, no matter the cost.
And then, slowly, painfully, I let go. I stop fighting the magic, stop trying to control it. I let it flow through me, let it fill me, let it become a part of me.
