The Wednesday Waltz
*This feels so right,* she thought, her gaze drifting over the sharp planes of his face, the curve of his lips as he smiled at something the pianist said. *Like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.*
During the intermission, they stepped outside for a breath of fresh air, leaning against the brick wall of the building as they watched the passersby strolling down the sidewalk. The night air was cool and crisp, scented with the aroma of distant rain and the faint tang of the city.
“I’m glad you came tonight, Evelyn,” Leo said, his voice low and intimate in the semi-darkness. “I wasn’t sure if jazz was your kind of thing, but I thought it might be a nice change of pace from the usual classical fare.”
“I’m glad you invited me,” Evelyn replied, her voice equally soft. “I’m enjoying myself immensely. The music is wonderful… and the company is even better.”
Leo’s smile was a flash of white in the darkness, his eyes glinting behind his glasses. “I feel the same way.” He reached out, his fingers brushing against hers where they rested on the rough brick. “I… I’ve been wanting to tell you something, Evelyn. But I wasn’t sure if it was too soon, or if you were ready to hear it.”
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat. “What is it, Leo?”
He took a step closer, his hand closing over hers, his thumb tracing circles on her knuckles. “These past few months… getting to know you, dancing with you, talking with you… it’s been the brightest spot in my life in a long time. You’ve become… very special to me, Evelyn. More than just a friend.”
He paused, his gaze searching hers, a question in his dark eyes. “I care for you, Evelyn. Deeply. And I… I’d like to see where this could go, if you’re willing. I know the age difference is… unconventional, to say the least. And I know we’re both still grieving, in our own ways. But I can’t help feeling that… that this is something worth exploring. Something worth taking a chance on.”
Evelyn’s free hand came up to cover her mouth, her eyes widening in surprise and a rush of tangled emotions. She’d sensed the growing closeness between them, the undercurrent of attraction that had been building for weeks, but she hadn’t dared to hope that Leo might feel the same way.
*He’s so young,* a part of her whispered, the voice of caution and doubt. *What could he possibly see in a woman like you?*
But another part of her, the part that had come alive again in Leo’s presence, shouted that voice down. *He sees you,* it insisted. *He sees the real you, the you that’s been hiding behind grief and solitude for so long.*
“Leo…” Her voice was thick with emotion, her fingers trembling in his. “I… I care for you too. More than I thought possible. And I want to see where this could go, too.” She took a deep breath, her gaze locking with his. “The age difference… it doesn’t matter to me. What matters is how I feel when I’m with you. How you make me feel… alive again. Hopeful again.”
Leo’s smile was radiant, his eyes shining with relief and joy. He stepped even closer, his free hand coming up to cup her cheek, his thumb stroking the soft skin there. “Evelyn…” he breathed, his head dipping towards hers.
The first touch of his lips was tentative, a whisper-soft brush that sent a jolt of electricity through Evelyn’s veins. She swayed into him, her free hand coming up to rest on his chest, feeling the steady thump of his heart beneath her palm.
The kiss deepened, turning slow and sweet, a tender exploration that had Evelyn’s head spinning and her knees trembling. Leo’s lips were warm and soft, his breath mingling with hers, the taste of whiskey and something uniquely him dancing on her tongue.
They broke apart after a long, breathless moment, their foreheads touching, their breathing ragged. Leo’s hand was still on her cheek, his other hand clasped tightly with hers. “Wow,” he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. “That was…”
“Wonderful,” Evelyn finished, her own voice shaky and breathless. “Absolutely wonderful.”
They stood there for a long moment, lost in each other, the sounds of the city fading into the background. Finally, Leo pulled back, his smile soft and tender. “We should probably head back inside. The second set will be starting soon.”
Evelyn nodded, reluctant to let the moment end but knowing he was right. They made their way back to their table, hands clasped beneath the tablecloth, a new, electric awareness humming between them.
The rest of the concert passed in a haze of music and emotion, Evelyn’s thoughts whirling with the implications of what had just happened. When the final notes faded away and the audience erupted into applause, she and Leo exchanged a glance filled with shared understanding and breathless anticipation.
The drive back to Evelyn’s house was quiet, a comfortable silence filled with unspoken words and lingering glances. When they pulled up in front of her tidy bungalow, Leo turned off the engine and turned to face her, his expression serious.
“Evelyn… I meant what I said earlier. I want to do this right. I want to take things slow, give us both time to adjust and figure out what we want.” He reached out, his fingers tangling with hers. “But I also want you to know that… that I’m in this. For the long haul. If you’ll have me.”
Evelyn’s heart swelled, a wave of affection and gratitude washing over her. “I want that too, Leo. More than anything.” She squeezed his fingers, her gaze locking with his. “We’ll figure it out… together.”
He nodded, his smile soft and hopeful. “Together,” he echoed.
They walked to the door hand in hand, the night air cool and fragrant around them. At the threshold, Evelyn turned to face him, her key in her hand. “Thank you for tonight, Leo. For… for everything.”
Leo’s answer was to step closer, his hands coming up to frame her face, his lips descending on hers in a kiss that was both tender and passionate, a promise of things to come. Evelyn melted into him, her free arm wrapping around his waist, pulling him closer.
They kissed for long, breathless minutes, lost in the taste and feel of each other, the world narrowing to the press of their bodies and the pounding of their hearts. When they finally broke apart, they were both flushed and breathless, their eyes heavy-lidded with desire.
“Goodnight, Evelyn,” Leo murmured, his forehead resting against hers, his breath warm on her lips.
“Goodnight, Leo,” she whispered back, her voice thick with emotion.
He stepped back, his hands trailing down her arms to squeeze her fingers one last time before letting go. “I’ll see you on Wednesday?”
Evelyn nodded, her smile wide and bright. “I’ll be counting the minutes.”
Leo’s answering smile was radiant, his eyes filled with warmth and promise. “Me too.”
He turned and walked back to his car, his footsteps echoing on the sidewalk. Evelyn watched him go, her fingers touching her kiss-swollen lips, the scent of his sandalwood cologne lingering in the air like a promise.
As she unlocked the door and stepped inside, she knew that something had shifted between them, something fundamental and irrevocable. They had crossed a threshold, taken a step into uncharted territory.
But for the first time in a long time, Evelyn wasn’t afraid. She was excited, hopeful, ready to see where this new path would lead.
*One step at a time,* she thought, a smile playing at the corners of her lips as she made her way up the stairs to bed. *One waltz step at a time.*
Five Months Later
The familiar strains of “The Blue Danube” filled the community center auditorium, the music washing over Evelyn like a warm, comforting wave. She moved in perfect sync with Leo, their bodies flowing together as if they’d been dancing this way for a lifetime instead of a mere matter of months.
*It’s hard to believe how much has changed since that first awkward waltz,* she mused, her gaze drifting over the sharp planes of Leo’s face, the curve of his smile as he guided her across the polished floor. *How two lost souls found each other in the most unexpected of places.*
As the music swelled to a close, Leo spun her out in a graceful arc, then pulled her back in, dipping her low over his arm. Evelyn laughed, the sound bright and carefree, her earlier melancholy forgotten in the joy of the moment.
“Show-offs,” Marjorie teased as they made their way off the floor, her eyes twinkling with good humor.
Leo just grinned, his arm wrapping around Evelyn’s waist as he pulled her close. “Can you blame me?” he asked, his gaze warm on her face. “I’ve got the most beautiful partner in the room.”
