The Wednesday Waltz

Evelyn felt a blush rise to her cheeks, her heart fluttering in her chest. “Flatterer,” she chided, but her smile was soft and pleased.

Later, as they were gathering their things, Leo turned to her, his expression turning serious. “I’ve been meaning to ask you something, Evelyn. I’ve booked a little getaway for us… a long weekend at a seaside cottage in Mendocino. I thought… I thought it might be nice to have some time, just the two of us.”

Evelyn’s heart leaped, her eyes widening in surprise and delight. “Leo… that sounds wonderful. When do we leave?”

“Next Friday,” he said, his smile widening at her obvious enthusiasm. “I’ve already arranged everything… the cottage, the meals, even a private dance floor overlooking the ocean.”

Evelyn’s free hand came up to cover her mouth, her eyes shining with happy tears. “Oh, Leo… I can’t wait.”

As they walked out to the car, hand in hand, Evelyn felt a sense of rightness settle over her, a bone-deep certainty that this was exactly where she was meant to be. The road ahead was still uncertain, the future a blank page waiting to be written. But for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t afraid to turn the page.

*One step at a time,* she thought, echoing the words she’d said to herself so many months ago. *One waltz step at a time.*

In the quiet darkness of the car, Leo’s hand found hers, their fingers intertwining as naturally as breathing. “Penny for your thoughts?” he asked, his voice low and intimate in the hushed space.

Evelyn turned to look at him, her heart full to bursting. “I was just thinking,” she said softly, “that I can’t wait to see what the future holds… as long as I’m facing it with you.”

Leo’s smile was radiant, his eyes filled with warmth and promise. “I couldn’t agree more, my love.” He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles. “Here’s to our next dance… and all the dances to come.”

As the car sped through the night, carrying them towards home and the promise of a new chapter, Evelyn knew that whatever came next, they would face it together, one step, one waltz, one heartbeat at a time.
