Voltage and Vow

He knows she heard. He knows she understands. The silent acknowledgment hangs in the charged air between them, across the distance of the stage, a silent, seismic shift. The song, their song, has been released into the world, a raw, beating heart laid bare under the stage lights. And nothing, Siena realizes with a dizzying lurch, will ever be the same.

The roar of the crowd is still vibrating in Siena’s bones as she pushes her way through the throng backstage, her focus singular, laser-sharp. Festival staff and hangers-on blur at the edges of her vision. She finds Dario’s dressing room – a glorified tent, really, its canvas walls vibrating with the muffled thump of distant music. She doesn’t knock. She throws open the flap.

He’s standing with his back to her, shrugging out of his sweat-drenched shirt. The sight of his bare back, the play of muscle under inked skin, does nothing to cool her fire. He glances over his shoulder, his face hidden in the dim light filtering through the canvas. “Siena.” His voice is low, rough, still carrying the rasp from the performance.

“You wrote that about me,” she states, her voice tight, trembling not with tears, but with a furious, bewildered energy. The song’s lyrics, its raw vulnerability, echo in her skull, a brand. “About us. ‘Voltage and Vow’. What the hell was that, Dario? A public flaying?”

He turns fully, dropping the damp shirt. His chest rises and falls, still catching his breath. “It’s a song, Siena. That’s what I do. I write what I feel. What I… live.” He takes a step towards her. The small space shrinks further. The air reeks of his exertion, the lingering ozone of the stage, and something else, something charged and dangerous. “You didn’t like it?”

“Like it?” The word explodes from her. “It was… it was everything. Everything we haven’t said. Everything I didn’t even know… Christ, Dario, you laid us bare in front of fifty thousand people!” Her hands are clenched at her sides, nails biting into her palms. The adrenaline from the performance, from the shock of the song, from weeks of pent-up tension, is a wildfire in her blood. “Was that your plan? To force my hand? To make me confront this… this thing between us?”

“What thing, Siena?” he challenges, taking another step. He’s close enough now that she can feel the heat radiating off him, see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes, the lingering sheen of sweat on his skin. “The thing where you manage me? The thing where we fight? Or the thing where you look at me like you’re drowning and I’m the only air?”

His words land like blows, stealing her breath. “Don’t,” she whispers, the fight momentarily draining out of her, replaced by a terrifying vulnerability. “Don’t twist this. Don’t make it about some… some imagined connection.”

“Imagined?” He laughs, a short, harsh sound devoid of humor. “You think this is imagination?” He gestures between them, the space crackling. “This tension? This… voltage? It’s real, Siena. It’s the only real thing on this whole damn tour.” He reaches out, his hand hovering near her cheek, not touching, but the heat of his palm is a brand. “You feel it too. I know you do. I see it. Every time you look at me. Every time you fight me.”

She wants to deny it. To throw his words back at him, to rebuild the walls he’s just shattered with a song. But the denial dies on her tongue. The truth of it, the terrifying, exhilarating truth, is a living thing in the cramped space between them. “It’s impossible,” she says instead, her voice hushed beneath the frantic beat of her own heart. “You. Me. This tour. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

“Maybe,” he concedes, his gaze dropping to her mouth, lingering there. “Or maybe it’s the only thing that isn’t a disaster.” His hand finally makes contact, his knuckles brushing along her jawline, a feather-light touch that ignites a path of fire across her skin. “Siena…”

Her name on his lips, spoken like that – rough, wanting – is the spark that ignites the tinder. The last shreds of her resistance incinerate. With a sound that’s half-sob, half-surrender, she closes the distance between them. Her hands fist in his hair, pulling him down to meet her as she rises on her toes. Their lips collide.

It’s not a gentle kiss. It’s weeks of frustration, of arguments, of denied attraction, unleashed in a single, devastating connection. His arms band around her, crushing her against the hard length of his body. He tastes of salt, of heat, of the raw energy of the stage. Her back hits the canvas wall of the tent, the rough fabric scraping against her skin, a counterpoint to the overwhelming heat of him. His hands are everywhere – tangling in her hair, gripping her hip, sliding under the hem of her shirt to brand the skin of her lower back. She nips at his bottom lip, hard enough to draw a groan from deep in his chest, and he retaliates by kissing her deeper, harder, stealing the breath from her lungs.

They break apart for a fraction of a second, gasping, foreheads pressed together, breath mingling. His eyes are black in the dim light, pupils blown wide with desire. “Siena,” he rasps, the single word holding a universe of need.

“Shut up, Dario,” she breathes, and pulls him back in.

This time, the kiss is slower, deeper, a deliberate exploration that sends molten heat pooling low in her belly. His hands slide down to cup her ass, lifting her effortlessly. She wraps her legs around his waist, the hard press of his arousal against her core a delicious, maddening pressure. He walks them backwards the few steps to the small, rickety dressing table, setting her down on its edge. Something – a water bottle, a makeup case – clatters to the floor. Neither notices.

His mouth trails fire down her throat, sucking, biting, soothing the sting with his tongue. Her head falls back, a moan escaping her as his teeth find the sensitive juncture of her neck and shoulder. Her fingers dig into the muscles of his shoulders, nails scraping over damp skin. He tugs at her shirt, impatient, and she lifts her arms, letting him pull it off. The cooler air of the tent raises goosebumps on her skin, but his mouth is a brand on her collarbone, his hands searing as they cup her breasts through the thin lace of her bra. He thumbs her nipples, a calloused rasp against the sensitive peaks, and she arches into his touch with a choked cry.

“Dario, please…” The plea escapes before she can stop it, raw and desperate.

He chuckles, low and dark, the sound vibrating against her skin. “Please what, cariño?” His fingers find the clasp of her bra, deftly unhooking it. The scrap of lace falls away. His gaze drops, hot and hungry, to her bared breasts. “Tell me what you want.”

His eyes, dark and intense, hold hers for a breathless moment. “I want…” she starts, her voice catching, “I want you. Now. Hard.” The boldness shocks her, but the answering flare in his gaze, the way his hands tighten on her hips, confirms it. No more games. No more denials.

He kisses her again, a deep, filthy promise, as his hands work at her jeans. The button, the zipper, the rough denim dragged down her legs – it’s frantic, almost clumsy in their shared desperation. She kicks them free, her sandals following. His own jeans are next, shoved down just enough to free his straining erection. He’s hot, hard, velvet over steel against her stomach.

“Condom,” she gasps against his mouth, a sliver of sanity piercing the haze.

He freezes for a fraction of a second, then curses vehemently in Spanish. He pulls back, his chest heaving, eyes wild. “Wallet,” he rasps, fumbling for the discarded jeans, finding the worn leather. He fishes out a foil packet, tearing it open with his teeth. She takes it from him, their fingers brushing, and rolls it on him, the touch making him shudder.

Then he’s pushing her back onto the table, the cool laminate a shock against her bare skin. He hooks one of her legs over his shoulder, opening her completely. For a heartbeat, he pauses, his gaze raking over her, possessive and searing. Then he’s thrusting inside, hard and deep, filling her in one powerful stroke.

She cries out, her back arching off the table, the sensation overwhelming. He feels huge, invasive, perfect. He doesn’t give her time to adjust. He sets a punishing rhythm, pounding into her with a force that borders on brutal, each thrust driving the air from her lungs. The table rattles precariously. The sounds of their joining – flesh against flesh, harsh breaths, her choked cries, his low groans – fill the small space, raw and undeniable. It’s not lovemaking; it’s a claiming, a release of weeks of coiled tension, a visceral, animal need.
