Midnight Swim

I kiss them back just as fiercely, my hands coming up to tangle in their hair, pulling them closer. We kiss like that for long moments, the water lapping around us, the city lights our only witnesses. It's perfect, this moment, this closeness, this intimacy.

But the clock is still ticking, the night slipping away from us. The pool will close, this rooftop will be renovated, and this moment will be just a memory. But for now, for this one perfect night, we have each other, and the water, and the city lights, and it's enough. It's everything.

We kiss until we're breathless, until the water feels cold against our heated skin. Kai pulls back slowly, their lips brushing mine one last time before they rest their forehead against mine, their eyes closed, their breathing ragged.

"Wow," they whisper, and I laugh, soft and breathless.

"Yeah," I agree, my hands still tangled in their hair. "Wow."

We stand like that for a long moment, just breathing together, the water lapping gently around our waists. The city lights shimmer on the surface, painting Kai's skin in shades of gold and silver, and I commit this moment to memory, the feel of their body against mine, the scent of their cologne mingling with the chlorine and my own perfume.

"It doesn't have to end, you know," Kai murmurs after a while, their voice low and rough. "Just because this place is closing."

I pull back slightly, looking up at them, a question in my eyes.

"I mean, we could see each other again," they say, their hands tightening on my waist. "Outside of this. If you want to."

I smile, slow and sure. "I'd like that," I say, and I mean it. This, whatever it is, it feels too good to let go. "But where? This rooftop... it's special."

Kai smiles back, a glint of mischief in their green eyes. "I might know a place. A private beach, down the coast. Very secluded. Very... accommodating."

I raise an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? Tell me more."

But before Kai can answer, a voice cuts through the night air. "River? You still here?"

Marco, the security guard, his voice echoing from the elevator bank.

I sigh, resting my forehead against Kai's chest for a moment. "Duty calls," I murmur, and Kai laughs, low and warm.

"Rain check?" they ask, their hands sliding up my back, leaving trails of warmth on my skin.

"Absolutely," I say, and then I'm pulling away, swimming towards the edge of the pool, my body feeling loose and satisfied, my skin humming with the memory of Kai's touch.

I climb out of the water, grabbing a towel from a nearby lounge chair and wrapping it around my shoulders. Kai follows, pulling themselves out of the pool in one smooth motion, the water streaming off their body.

We stand there for a moment, just looking at each other, the city lights painting patterns on our skin. The rooftop is quiet now, just the hum of the city below and the soft lap of the water against the tile. It's bittersweet, this ending, but it feels right, somehow. A promise, not a goodbye.

"I'll call you," Kai says, pulling on their jeans and t-shirt, their wet hair leaving damp patches on the shoulders.

"I'll answer," I say, and then they're stepping closer, kissing me one last time, quick and soft and full of promise.

And then they're gone, disappearing into the elevator, and I'm alone on the rooftop, the pool shimmering at my feet, the city lights stretching out below me like a promise.

I take a deep breath, savoring the moment, the memory, the possibility. The rooftop may be closing, but something new is just beginning. I can feel it, a current beneath my skin, a pull like the tide. I smile, and I start to gather my things, ready to face whatever comes next.
