The Sea Prince's Bargain

“I’m saying that I was wrong,” Aris says, his gaze locked with mine. “I’m saying that I see you, Kael. I see your courage, your loyalty, your determination. I see the magic that flows through you, the power you hold in check.”

He leans forward, his hand reaching across the table to cover mine. “I’m saying that I want to trust you,” he murmurs, his voice a low caress. “I want to know you, as you truly are.”

I swallow hard, my mind reeling. “I want that too,” I admit, my voice barely audible above the rush of my pulse. “But trust is a fragile thing, Aris. It’s not something that can be given lightly.”

“I know,” Aris says, his thumb stroking over the back of my hand, sending sparks of sensation dancing across my skin. “But I’m willing to try. If you are.”

I look down at our joined hands, at the contrast of his pale, elegant fingers against my own tanned, calloused skin. I think of the scars we share, the secrets we hold. I think of the way my magic seems to call to his, like the tide to the shore.

“I’m willing,” I say, my voice soft but firm. “But I need you to understand. My sister comes first. I won’t rest until she’s free.”

Aris nods, his expression serious. “I understand,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. “And I will help you, Kael. I give you my word. Once we understand the bond between us, once we unravel the mystery of our scars, I will do everything in my power to help you free Lirelle.”

I look up at him, my eyes searching his face for any hint of deception, any sign that this is just another trick, another game. But all I see is sincerity, a determination that mirrors my own.

“Then let us eat,” Aris says, his voice warm with invitation. “And let us talk, as equals. As allies.”

We turn to the food, and for a time, there is only the clink of dishes, the murmur of conversation, the shared pleasure of the meal. The fish is delicate and flavorful, the seaweed salad crisp and briny, the roe bursting against my tongue with a salty tang.

Finn darts between us, snatching tidbits from our fingers, his dark eyes bright with mischief. I laugh as he steals a particularly choice morsel from Aris’s plate, dodging the prince’s half-hearted swipe with a playful chirp.

“He’s a scoundrel,” Aris says, his tone fond, and I nod, my heart swelling with affection for my small, furry companion.

As we eat, Aris tells me of the Sea Court, of the history and traditions of his people. He speaks of the great battles they have fought, the alliances they have forged, the magic they have wielded. He speaks with a pride that is almost palpable, a love for his realm that shines in his eyes and vibrates in his voice.

I listen, fascinated, my own world feeling small and insignificant in comparison. I tell him of my life on the surface, of the bargains I’ve struck, the magic I’ve learned to control. I speak of Lirelle, of her kindness, her gentle spirit, her love for all growing things.

Aris listens in turn, his expression thoughtful, his questions insightful. He seems genuinely interested in my world, in my life, in the forces that have shaped me.

As the meal draws to a close, a comfortable silence falls between us, broken only by the chirp of Finn as he curls up in my lap for a nap.

“I have something to show you,” Aris says at last, his voice a low murmur that vibrates in my bones. “Something I think you’ll appreciate.”

I look up at him, a question in my eyes, and he smiles, a mysterious, knowing smile that sends a shiver down my spine.

“Come,” he says, rising to his feet and extending a hand to me. “Let me show you the true beauty of the Sea Court.”

I take his hand, letting him pull me to my feet, Finn still cradled in the crook of my arm. Aris leads me out of the chamber, back through the winding corridors of the castle, until we emerge into the open water.

We swim upwards, towards the surface, the light growing brighter, the water warmer. I gasp as we break through into the shallows, into a world of color and light that takes my breath away.

We’re in a coral garden, the seafloor a riot of shapes and hues. Delicate fans of coral sway in the current, their branches adorned with tiny, jewel-like polyps. Schools of fish dart and weave between the coral heads, their scales flashing silver and blue and gold in the sunlight filtering down from above.

I turn to Aris, my eyes wide with wonder. “It’s incredible,” I breathe, my voice hushed with awe. “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful.”

Aris smiles, his expression soft, almost tender. “This is only the beginning,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. “There are wonders here beyond your wildest dreams.”

He takes my hand again, his fingers warm and solid against mine, and leads me deeper into the garden. We swim past towering spires of coral, through underwater caves adorned with glittering crystals, over fields of seagrass that sway and dance in the current.

Everywhere I look, there is life, vibrant and teeming. Fish of every shape and size, crustaceans scuttling across the sand, anemones waving their tentacles in the water. I feel a sense of peace, of belonging, that I’ve never known before, as if I’ve come home to a place I never knew I’d left.

We swim for hours, or so it seems, losing ourselves in the beauty of the reef. Aris points out different species of fish, telling me their names, their habits, their role in the delicate balance of the ecosystem. He shows me hidden grottos and secret caves, places where the magic of the Sea Court is strongest, where the very water seems to hum with power.

As the sun begins to sink towards the horizon, painting the water in shades of orange and pink and gold, Aris leads me back to the castle, back to the grotto that has become my home.

We don’t speak as we swim, the silence between us comfortable, companionable. I feel a sense of closeness to Aris that I never thought possible, a bond that goes deeper than our shared scars, our shared magic.

Trust is still fragile between us, a delicate thing that could shatter at any moment. But for now, in this moment, it feels strong, unbreakable.

We reach the grotto just as the last rays of the sun are fading from the water above. Aris turns to face me, his hand still clasped in mine.

“Thank you,” I say, my voice soft with emotion. “For showing me your world. For trusting me.”

Aris smiles, his eyes warm, his expression open. “Thank you for seeing it,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. “For understanding its beauty.”

He leans in, his free hand coming up to brush a stray lock of hair from my face. I shiver at the touch, a spark of something hot and wild igniting in my veins.

His eyes darken, his gaze dropping to my lips, and for a moment, I think he might kiss me. I sway towards him, my heart pounding against my ribs, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

But then he pulls back, his hand dropping to his side, his expression closing off, becoming unreadable once more.

“Rest well, Kael,” he says, his voice soft but firm. “Tomorrow, we begin our search for the truth in earnest.”

And with that, he turns and swims away, leaving me alone with Finn and a head full of questions, and a heart full of a hope I never thought I’d feel.

The next morning dawns grey and unsettled, the water above the grotto roiling with the promise of a storm. I wake to the sound of thunder, a distant rumble that vibrates through the water, setting my teeth on edge.

Finn is restless, pacing the confines of the grotto, his small body twitching with nervous energy. I try to soothe him, but my own unease is a knot in my stomach, a prickle on my skin.

Aris arrives just as the first flickers of lightning dance across the surface, casting eerie shadows on the walls of the grotto. His expression is grim, his eyes dark with concern.

“A storm is coming,” he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. “A bad one. We need to reinforce the wards around the castle.”

I nod, my own magic stirring in response to the tension in the air. “What can I do?” I ask, my voice tight with anticipation.
